Today

They’re putting the new rafters in place. I’m cleaning out the shed.

There are a few obvious “go to the dump” pieces: a broken-down particle board bookcase I bought when I had the store. The ones which were put together were disposed of long, long ago. This pile of boards has been in the shed since something like 2001! It’s going today.

When we bought the house, the kitchen lights were fluorescents with a plastic grid hiding them. One of those grids (or more?) are in the shed too. I don’t know how long the grid has been in the shed, but we’ve had the house > 20 years now, so the thing has been in our space at least that long. It could have been an extra stored in the shed when we bought the place, or it could have been moved there when we replaced the lights. I don’t know — and I don’t care. It’s going away.

About 5 (?) years ago, at auction, we bought 2 single-pane sidelights. We have the better of the two installed in the new kitchen wall. (Partially replacing the two windows we removed from there last summer.)  I had the idea we might use the 2nd sidelight on the shed itself, but this morning DH said to get rid of it, so it’s going!

At one point the contractor asked if we had any 8 penny nails? I didn’t know, but there was a peanut butter jar with a few huge (he said they were 10 penny nails) in it and I gave it to him. Told him NOT to return the jar or any he didn’t use. One more item gone!

I need to get back to the shed clean out so I can actually FINISH today, preferably this morning. (I’d like to go to the antique store this afternoon and maybe run a few errands too!)

Mundane, necessary, and productive: my day so far. Not too bad!

I won’t get this done this morning. For one thing, it’s noon. For another, the dump doesn’t open ’til 1:00!

Worked on Storage, Yesterday

Intend to do more, today. And yet more, tomorrow. I may have to rent a tiny unit to take the furniture. I’m not sure if the antique store has a place for furniture in its new location. If not, then pieces need to be hauled to auction, sold otherwise, or given away. (Purged books from the house today instead.)

We are getting a new back roof this year and maybe some storage space along with it. However, it will NOT be filled with boxes of books. If I bring the stuff home and it just sits here, I have only gained the price of the storage. And the price of the addition has to be considered in there too. The difference of course is that an additional utility area adds to the value of our home, not just a landlord’s bottom line. But as we’re talking about it right now, it will be a much bigger undertaking than we’d originally planned.

I still have WAY too much stuff. My ultimate goal this year is to have NO storage unit by 12/31 and be able to sanely (no box stacks, except perhaps in the attic) store what we keep. There’s a huge amount of stuff to shed between us and that goal, but I’m really tired of hauling things back and forth, trying to sell them or determine what happens to them. I don’t need the camouflage anymore and I’m tired of drowning in stuff!

I have no idea how well we can manage this. All I can do is try!

Took a box to the dump’s swap shop today. Also wrote notes to booksellers, collectors, etc. who are friends. Were they still interested in x or y or z type of book? If so, exactly what did they want? Got answers, Am getting a list together.  More stuff gone. Also, will have a way to sell the best of the stuff it looks like. Hurrah!

Nearly Done

with the taxes, or as much of it as I need to do actual work (not just getting data from the town, bills, or the checking account say). And I realized that I need a project. . . something fun, creative, and that will engage me for a few days, at least.

Not knitting. This feels like a paper, paint, markers, printer sort of thing.

What? I don’t know. I have the 1/2 finished bullet journal plan — that would be good. I had finally gotten to the “admission” that I wasn’t going to get what I wanted on my own. I need to pay someone to do the final art work. I know what I want, but I just don’t have the skills to make the pieces to my satisfaction.

Being able to actually use the bullet journal, rather than planning the planner, journal, diary, and calendar would be very helpful.

I have the stalled fabric rug to work on. (Not paper, that’s out.)

If I’m going to work with paper, I need the counter in my office clean and cleared. One reason the bullet journal is in the state it is? I have nowhere to easily lay out the pages. It would be most helpful to be able to use the counter I already have.

Cleaning up my office will take a week, minimum. It has been a “dumping ground” for too long. Its bookcases are slated to be moved to the attic this spring, and the counter and drawer units moved in the room, so we might be able to get a guest bed in there?

I think this is a really good idea. The living room/kitchen project is stalled until DH finishes the window/shelf unit thing. But that’s stalled because there’s a piece of furniture which needs to be put up for sale/removed first. That’s stalled because the antique store is moving the middle of March, and I already have a piece of furniture for sale there (you get to sell 1 at a time.) Soooo. . . .

Working on my office as a “next step” makes sense. Sigh. It’s always been one of the coldest rooms of the house and it’s February, right? I can’t leave the door open because the small cat thinks pushing things off of shelves/counters is fun. (She’s broken several things in my office already, so she is NOT allowed in there!) Sigh.

On the other hand, if I start this and interleave it between the remaining accounting/tax gather, I will not have to spend hours in a cold room without end. I can use short pieces of time and then go back to the paperwork — and get both done.

When I get the counter cleared, I can write up/show (I hope?) what I want to the graphics art person. It’s a plan!

I get one more cuppa coffee today. I’m off to get it and then start to plot out what has to happen in my office, first.

 

 

Next Year?

I have goals, no resolutions beyond last year’s: to be more consistent.

I’ve succeeded in that there are 3 rooms of the house which are NOT always, but more consistently picked up and cleaner.I have (another) idea for how to make it into a habit I can forget and just do, but I’m doing okay, if not great without it.

Goal #1: To get the kitchen/dining room unpacked enough to be usable.. A lot of the junk which was in the living room wound up in the kitchen. Some things from the wall redo which were displaced from the sunroom wound up there as well. So, there’s items from THREE rooms or functions here, well FOUR:

  1. BOOKS, previously for sale/store stock.
  2. General STUFF, previously in the living room.
  3. General STUFF, hardware, etc. previously in the workshop.
  4. The items, FURNITURE, and STUFF, which had been stored in the kitchen or dining areas.

Also a batch of STUFF from the kitchen went to the storage, so that needs to be dealt with too.

My next big goal? Get the kitchen/dining room usable, again.

This involves not just going through the stuff and decluttering the space but a major cull. There’s simply too much to keep it all. I’m going to do something radical, for me. I’m going to give myself a “due” date, 6/30/2017 to get this done. Hopefully it will be done long before that, but we’ll see!

Dismantling Christmas

On the 27th, I took the tinsel and beaded icicles off the tree. I was curious what it would look like, and frankly it looked rather barren.

I have to both find the glass ones I bought years ago and make more beaded ones. Most of the ones I have were a gift from a family who crafted items for sale, including beaded icicles.

I’ve been beading since I was a small girl. When I’d visit them, if they were making icicles, I’d grab a needle and do some while I was there. They didn’t pay me, it wasn’t for that. It was just a friendly thing to do, fun, and it helped them. That Christmas my present was several boxes. Usually their gift was sweet breads and cookies. But that year there was a box chock full of the icicles. What I have could be the ones I made, or not. It doesn’t matter. I value them as a reminder of the friendship I had with Lois, Gini, and Char, all gone now, alas.

I started to take one of my beaded garlands off the stair hand rail (I had wrapped two around it). The monofilament I’d made it with years ago broke. Although I kept it from fountaining beads up and down the stairs, I have to restring the several yards of garland. I’m in the midst of  restringing it on stronger, new monofilament. There’s one other Christmas ornament, a fimo one, which needs to be glued back together.

Ninety-five percent 0f the Christmas stuff is packed. The moving box I’d wrapped is full and I started a second. (I’d packed smaller  boxes inside bigger ones.) The idea that I now have less than the small trunk’s worth of Christmas stuff was overly optimistic. Yes I broke some things. Yes, I sold some too. Yes, I gave some away. But, aside from the tree, there were pieces on the console table, in the kitchen, on the end tables, the front door and the hall. If it was just the ornaments I had on the tree, yes, I have less.

I broke 2 balls and gave away a box of balls, a bag of lights, a box of tinsel, the few hangers I had on ornaments. I sold/put out for sale 5 ornaments that had been in the attic, a small box of them, and a few others. I’d already sold 3 table top trees. Need to do more culling and the items which haven’t sold are going away, somewhere, somehow, but they aren’t coming home again.

I also have to make the box(es) up for next year. My intention is to make it like a big gift box, or find some, I doubt I can find them big enough though. What I’m thinking about is a box which has a deeper lid than file boxes usually do, something like this:

If I can get these, I can do what I want, have it look neat, and have storage the way I want it at the same time. We’ll see! I can buy them of course, it’s if the shipping cost is insane or not. I found a source locally! I can do what I had in mind. Cool!!!! I may (or may not) post images when I get it done.

Anyway, the tree is down, the ornaments are packed. The tree is outside ready to go to the dump, the table has been polished and the large ornamental piece which normally lives on it has been replaced.

The reason that I’m so focused on the decorative stuff is that we decided no gifts this year. Those we got were all consumables, and that is exactly what we wanted. No more stuff!

Although the two boxes and the tree stand haven’t been put away, Christmas has definitely been dismantled and the process was much tidier and more timely than in years past.

Going in the right direction!

If I can do things the way I want, I’ll get through enough other stuff this year so that I can get back to and cull/edit the Christmas stuff again, before next December. We’ll see!

 

 

An Observation

One of the main categories of “stuff” here are long-term held things which have nowhere to be stowed when not in use!

To that end, I’ve been compiling lists of things which need “homes”: out of season bedding, garden equipment, etc.

One bugaboo is down comforters. It gets COLD here during a North East winter, and we have more than one. But during the warm months, they have nowhere to be put away. My last idea was to put them atop the wardrobe, which works fine, but looks terrible and doesn’t keep them clean. Putting them in plastic bags doesn’t work, because it’s impossible to keep them flat and tidy. Also, according to one source I found (a down comforter manufacturer) they should be stored in something breathable, not plastic anyway. Hmmmm.

So, an idea: why not make little “boxes” of fabric for them? If need be, the boxes could be enforced with buckram “boards” But if not, it would be a pretty easy thing to sew up and it would both 1) make them tidy and 2)keep them out of the dust, etc.

So this morning I designed a box for my down comforters to be stored in. I have old sheets I intend to make these with, probably at least enough for 2. I made a sketch of what I had in mind on a graphics program, printed it out, then cut it out and put in creases where I’d have seams. The first version was obviously wrong, I’d forgotten a side. Then I did a little tweaking and came up with what’s below.

This is a “sketch” and NOT cleaned up, so it isn’t perfect. The idea is to give me enough info that when I go to mark, cut, sew my fabric I’ll remember what I learned from my little paper boxes. But  this is NOT a pattern!

Do you do things like this? I’ll post updates as I make a pattern, mark, cut, sew and try and use these. We’ll see if my crazy idea works!

Wardrobe Quest and Moving Stuff

The Great Wardrobe Quest I think is solved, maybe. In our budget and within the size constraints, we can buy wardrobes from a local unfinished furniture place, painted. I had looked at these earlier in the process, but the same pieces, unfinished are as much as cheap antique ones and of course, not made as well. I was willing to pay that kind of price for “real” stuff, solid wood, not pine, hand-made, but not modernly manufactured out of pine and made God knows how? However, the price is something like $100 cheaper if you buy them painted. Not sure why except maybe they can use crappier wood?

We’ve decided the new wall also means a new floor, 100+ square feet of it, which isn’t going to be cheap, alas. But that will start us down the road to the rest of the bedroom rehab, which will be a GOOD thing!

One item we bought at that Sunday auction was a piece of kitchen equipment, and it needs a largish piece of counter to sit on — no way to put this one on a wall, or at least not without a lot more planning and reorganization! DH has been working on rehabbing it, cleaning it up, putting new feet on it, etc. so it’s ready to be used now, almost. All I have to do is find a place to put it!

One item slated to go to the flea market (4/5) and/or the new booth is our antique oak dining room table, presently stored in the kitchen, in the “dead” corner. So, instead of going to the gallery opening with DH as originally planned, I’m going to stay home and redo the kitchen storage wall, try to free up both tables, and  other general clean up/move around/get it ready to get it OUTTA here stuff. Needs to happen. I’ll finish up this post this afternoon/evening when I’m done. (10:30 a.m.)

12:31 Box wall is dismantled. The new machine will go on the wall nearest the laundry room. In order to make this happen 3 of the 5 boxes need to be moved. I think 1 of them will become the bottom 2 shelves in the laundry room by the end of the day. The others will be used, maybe, if there’s room. Big problem is that I really can’t haul the new machine around, it’s too bulky. The weight I could probably manage, but the thing isn’t small . . . .

1:19 The bottom 2 boxes are back up with a hole for the new machine, its two detachable pieces as well as the food processor, its bulkier attachments, the dehydrator and the crock pot. I kept the 2 apparently sturdiest boxes for the bottom. One of them was downright flimsy, another a bit. I need to put things back together a bit more before I dismantle the other side in the kitchen or take down the shelf in the laundry. Too much stuff displaced at once makes it impossible to put anything away! As I was taking things down from the wall, I sorted them into two categories: things we use, things we don’t. The “don’t” stuff is almost all things I want to keep, I’ve edited this wall down several times already, but the stuff (a few vases and asst. other pieces) may wind up in the attic in a box rather than out in the kitchen/dining area.

1:41 All the books are out of one side of the book boxes under the counter. Sorted them into: these do not belong here (some of DH’s books, some crafting mostly) and frugal tips, frugal housewifery, historical cooking (doesn’t belong here), frugal cooking, frugal decorating and mixed frugal titles: tips with cooking, frugal decorating with shopping hints, etc. Next task is to pull the two book boxes out and vacuum where they have been for over a year. I’m sure the area needs cleaning!

5:03 The books are back in the boxes. They are sorted into: misfiled, books to sell or donate, and books that were put back were sorted by categories. You’d think I had a library or something! Time to go put the rest of the room back together!

5:37: Crunch Time! All the “it has to be there” stuff is put away. The rest of it needs to be sorted into use/store it elsewhere or out it goes!
